Illuminated Letters
Grade Level: 9-12th
Time: 4-5 class periods
Objectives: To explore the concept of illuminated manuscripts from Medieval/Renaissance time period. Students will create their own illuminated letter with the first letter of something that has importance (it could be their name, a favorite sports team, family member etc).
Purpose: Have students understand the concept of illuminated letters and relate it to their lives based on ancient history. As well as learning about framing and creating borders to their artwork.

Social Studies Standard 9 Global Connections
Experience that provides for the study of global connections
Materials:
Drawing paper, colored pencils, pencils, erasers, rulers, Sharpies
Acrylic paint, paint brushes, water, paper towels, rulers
Powerpoint
Books of fonts, and border designs

Procedure:
1) Look at Medieval Powerpoint (Illuminated manuscripts from Bibles/ancient documents)
2) What characteristics make these letters and images illuminated? -colors?
3) Discuss designs, colors and borders- pass around books for students to look at (Bible,
font/border design books)
4) Demonstrating framing to create border and show finished example
5) Have students fully sketch out and color rough draft of their illuminated letter (use books,
magazine and internet as resources), make sure students have 2 metallic colors incorporated into illuminated letters
6) Give approval to students to move onto transferring sketch onto canvas
7) Have students paint illuminated letters
8) Display works and discuss
Assessment:
Have group discussion of what students learned about medieval illuminated manuscripts and letters (summary), gallery walk having students view each other’s work , pick volunteers to share positive statements about art works. Collect and view completed works and look at forms to see if students understood concept of illuminated letters.
