Grade Level: 1-5
Theme Concepts:
Students will explore the ideas of transformation and metamorphosis meaning students be able to see recognizable objects and shapes in a different/ abstract visual images. Students will also be able to practice their script (writing their names in cursive, if in younger grade level write initial cursive for them). Students will also be able to understand the concept of mirror image and symmetry.

Give examples of mirror images (use a mirror in class as visual)
Introduce artists that use mirror image/surrealism such as Joan Miro- Surrealist/automatism painter (painting without thinking)
-Many of the shapes he made were biomorphic in nature (suggestive of the forms of living organisms)
Andre Masson- Surrealist
Art Production Concepts:
Tracing, rubbing, outlining, decorating (coloring/painting)
Teaching Strategies:
Introduction to mirror image/ reflection/symmetry
Class Discussion
Examples -use mirror

Creative & Critical Abilities, Behaviors, and Skills student will enhance:
Creativity- (generating a new product) students transform existing visual information into familiar and/ or defined objects and shapes to create monster image from their names
Independence/ Creation- each student’s name is spelled differently, that personal spelling determines what shapes a student see in their name and how students want to create their monster, there isn’t a set way it is suppose to look therefore students aren’t trying to create the same image
Incorporating prior knowledge/surrounding- students use what they already know about bodies and faces while creating their creatures.
NJCCCS (Standards & Indicators) (one visual arts & one non-arts):
Visual Arts 1.1.5.D.1 (The Creative Process): Identify elements of art and principles of design that are evident in everyday life
Mathematics 4.G.3 (Geometry): Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts
Materials:
Drawing paper
Crayons/markers/sharpies/oil pastels/colored pencils
Paint (if you choose to use with older grade levels)
Brushes
Bone tools for rubbing or scissors
Artmaking Steps:
1) Review mirror image
2) Pass out drawing paper, or paper crayons/markers etc
3) Have students fold paper vertically (in half hotdog way)
4) Write your name in cursive along the fold in oil pastel or pencil (if it's a younger grade level have this part prepared for them prior to class)
5) Use an object to rub with firm pressure so that your lines transfer. Open the paper and darken your transferred lines to make them clearer (can use sharpie to outline and define lines)
6) Use creativity to create a a monster/alien/creature with markers, crayons, oil pastels, colored pencils, etc.
7) Create an environment for your creature in the background (this step maybe too much for younger grade level due to time)
Aesthetics Steps/Questions:
1) Talk about reflection/mirror image- “Have you ever looked at an everyday object like a shinny car/sun glasses etc and saw a face or body in it?” Is it usually funny, scary? Does it surprise you, or do you usually expect it? Why do you think our minds do this?
2) “Why did you choose to turn your paper the way you did up right so you can slightly read your name if you’re looking at one side or upside down so you cannot recognize your name at all?” How might your creature be different if you had turned your paper the opposite way?- if time have students create monster having cursive face opposite direction of the one they already created
3) “If you have more time to further this activity what would you do? Would you write your middle name, a family member etc?”
