Monet Water Lilies
Grade Level: 2nd, 3rd
Time: 2-3 class periods
Objectives: To explore the concept of impressionism and painterly activity instead of smooth blended paintings. As well as learning to portray their impressions of water lilies, to express the marks that they make on the paper with crayons and watercolors, and expressing their color choices.
Purpose: Have students understand the concept of impressionism and relate it to their lives

1.1 The Creative Process All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles that govern the creation of works of art in dance, music, theatre, and visual art.
1.1.2.D.2 Identify elements of art and principles of design in specific works of art and explain how they are used.
Materials:
Drawing Paper
Crayons, watercolors, paint brushes
Powerpoint
Vocabulary:
Impressionism
Brush Strokes
Individual
Spirals
Procedure:
1) Look at Impressionism (Powerpoint-Monet)
2) What characteristics make his paintings impressionistic?
3) Discuss brush strokes and “fuzzy affect”
4) Demonstrate making water lilies 5) Have students practice making water lilies and lily pads on scrap paper
6) Pass out final paper and have students draw water lilies and lily pads and one small paper to create a giant water lily
7) Demonstrate making water color background of pond- discuss how water color works and to clean brush every time you want to change a color and not to paint the same area over and over again or paper will shred
8) Have students create background with blues, purples and green for big paper and they can choose colors for their small paper
9) Let artwork dry, display works and discuss
Assessment:
Have group discussion of what students learned about impressionism (summary), gallery walk having students view each other’s work , pick volunteers to share positive statements about art works. Collect and view completed works and look at forms to see if students understood concept of impressionism and individual brush strokes. Mount finished artworks on colored paper and post on bulletin board in hallway with a short description of what the class did and some background information on the artist students’ works were inspired by.
