Abstract Jack-o-Lanterns

Grade Level: 4-5th
Theme Concept:
To explore the concept of abstraction through cropping and rendering symbolic properties of jack o’ lanterns on their paper, which causes viewers make inferences order to figure out what they are looking at.
Aesthetics, Art Criticism, Art History:
Georgia O’Keeffe- abstract painter - Created floral abstraction 1920’s
Brancusi- abstract sculptor- Bird in Flight 1923
Art Production Concepts:
Drawing, ripping, gluing, coloring based on symbols that represent Jack-o-lantern

Materials:
Drawing Paper/ Construction Paper
Crayons, markers, glue
Artmaking Steps:
1) Pass out white drawing paper or construction paper and crayons/markers, glue etc
2) Have students draw a part of a Jack-o-lantern that interests them or rip paper to create image that fills up entire piece of paper
3) Color/ decorate Jack-o-lanterns
Aesthetics Steps/Questions:
1) Look at abstract art (Powerpoint-Georgia O’Keeffe& Brancusi)
2) What characteristics make her paintings abstract?
3) Discuss form and colors
4) Since it’s October, talk about Halloween traditions and show pictures of Jack-o-lanterns
5) Have students create their own idea of an abstract Jack-o-lantern
6) Emphasize colors of jack (orange, yellow, yellow orange, black, brown etc) and forms the shapes of an eye, part of a mouth or tooth, the curves of the pumpkin etc.
7) Display works and discuss
