Throughout my personal experiences as being in both the student role and teacher role I have developed a sense of my own personal ideologies that will allow me to become an inspiring and successful teacher in the future. After looking back on my educational experiences throughout my k-12 years and my undergraduate program I have been able to select teaching strategies that I observed, experienced and felt were influential and successful. I plan to use these strategies in my own classroom, and refer back to my old teachers as guidance while applying my own views into these strategies as well.
I believe the significance of homework is to get a student involved in preparatory study of the material presented and taught in a lesson as well as a review of the material. Repetition and work outside the classroom is beneficial to a student because the more a student practices a lesson, the easier it will become to understand. In addition, not every student thinks alike, everyone has his or her own perspective. Lessons are a foundation that gives a student the basic principles of a concept, however, once a student grasps the core concepts of a lesson, a student can build off that foundation and create their own.
Displaying student work can be seen has hanging up finished projects and works of art around the art classroom, around the school display cases or hall ways, taking photos and documentation of a student’s work in progress during its step by step process if the project is lengthy or complex, having student run art shows, or online school based galleries. Displaying student’s work is beneficial to students because it establishes a sense of pride in their hard work. Also being able to look back on how you created something shows you how far you have come to start to finish, and see how much your idea developed, changed etc from originals thoughts to completed piece.
Quizzes can be used as an informal assessment, like a check point to see what students know compared to what the teacher expects them to know at a certain point. Quizzes should never be used as a form of punishment. Quizzes are beneficial because it is a way to assess your students after a lesson or before a unit test. It shows the teacher what information the students are retaining and what area the students are having trouble with. Then the teacher has a better idea of what parts to go over again to make sure students understand it better. Small quizzes can help those students who have test anxiety to cope with taking tests better and becoming more confident in themselves. If the quiz is the same format as the unit test students feel better prepared for the test and usually do better.
Classroom arrangement is crucial in the classroom, between the student’s seating and supply storage and demonstration space it is hard to create a successful and comfortable learning community. There should be an emphasis on student desk or table placement, I want to try to make sure that every student can easily see the board, projection screen etc. you write information on and the area you do your demonstrations. You also want to make sure the seats are not too close together that students are not bumping each other. Good classroom arrangement is beneficial to the students because with less clutter all students can work more comfortably and freely, allowing their minds to flow. Good organization of materials in the classroom makes it easier for students to understand what material go together and where to put things back where they belong during clean up. Having the seat arranged enabling all students to see what is going on whether it is instructions, demonstrations, notes etc is makes it easier for the students to concentrate and not become distracted by trying to fidget to see.
Interdisciplinary teaching is known as incorporating different content area into a lesson, some refer to it as cross curricular teaching. This concept broadens a student’s knowledge by assisting them with making connections and relating different classes they are taking together. Having your lessons relate to other topics in other classes develops a sense of community, which makes the learning environment more comfortable. This also expresses a teacher to teacher support, when you incorporate a different content area topic in your lesson you show that you appreciate their content area and it usually gets reciprocated Interdisciplinary lessons are beneficial to students because they see how other subjects relate to each other. They can use higher level thinking to make cross curricular connections.
These are just some of the teaching strategies that I plan to implement in my classroom. I plan to add more strategies because a teacher is never finished with their education. I hope to speak with colleagues, supervisors, and faculty to compare and exchange new strategies and ideas. As well as attend conferences, conventions, staff development workshop etc to broaden my ideologies. With these strategies I expect students will have a positive, informative and exciting learning experience.
