Typography (Quote Grid)
Grade Level: 9-12th
Time: 2-3 class periods
Objectives: To explore the concept of gridding and typography.
Purpose: Have students express something they feel strongly about and can give a viewer some words of wisdom or become a positive influence.
NJCCCS: Visual and Performing Arts (Strand D)
1.1 The Creative Process All students will demonstrate an understanding of the elements and principles that govern the creation of works of art in dance, music, theatre, and visual art.
Materials:
Drawing paper, colored pencils, pencils
Erasers, rulers, Sharpies

Book of inspirational quotes
Vocabulary:
Gridding
Inspirational

Typography
Alignment
Procedure:
1) Look at Typography (Powerpoint and books
- Graffiti, Advertisements, Posters, Magazines
2) Discuss placement of letters, designs, colors, symbols
3) Demonstrate making a 1 inch grid, and block lettering
- Have all letters touch edge to edge in each box in all capitals
- Do not use all punctuation
4) Have students look up an inspirational/influential quote or song lyric
5) Students create grid, sketch out quote to avoid misspelling, go over letters in Sharpie
6) Erase all grid lines pencils marks
7) Color in background behind letters
- Minimum 2 colors
- Maximum 4 colors
8) Display works and discuss
Assessment:
Have group discussion of what students learned about medieval illuminated manuscripts and letters (summary), gallery walk having students view each other’s work , pick volunteers to share positive statements about art works. Collect and view completed works and look at forms to see if students understood concept of illuminated letters.
