An Eye for Magritte
Grade Level: 4th
Time: 3-4 class periods
Objectives: To explore the concept of surrealism and reflection by the inspiration of Rene Magritte a famous Surreal artist. This project is based on having students create a reflection of a fantasy or dreamlike image in the iris of an eye and learning how to create everything around the realistically with multicultural skin tone crayons.
Purpose: Have students understand the concept of surrealism and relate it to their lives by expressing their fantasies and dreams, as well as developing a sense of drawing real characteristics of an eye.

1.2 History of the Arts and Culture All students will understand the role, development and influence of the arts throughout history and across cultures.
1.2.5.A.2Relate common artistic elements that define distinctive art genres in visual arts.
Materials:
Drawing Paper
Multicultural crayons, markers, pencils, erasers
Tracers
PowerPoint
Vocabulary:
Surrealism/surrealist
Reflection/reflective
Symbolize

Procedure:
1) Look at Surrealism (Powerpoint on Rene Magritte)
2) Questions- What makes these art pieces, surrealism?
3) Discuss images, dreamlike and fantasy- relate to their life (cartoons, movies, books)
4) Discuss project, demonstrate steps, and distribute materials
5) Have students create an eye with a fantasy/dreamlike image in iris, create whole eye (eyebrows, lashes etc)
Steps-
Trace iris, create 2 different sketches, pick one to draw on final paper
Trace eye and iris tracer in sharpie, draw final image
Color in iris
6) Demonstrate and have students create realistic parts around the eye with multi-cultural skin tone crayons, create eyelashes, and flesh fold
7) Have students create realistic characteristics of eye
8) Display works and discuss
Assessment:
Have group discussion of what students learned about Surrealism (summary), ask specific questions like who was the artist we learned about, what type of art were we making etc. Compose a gallery walk having students view each other’s work, pick volunteers to share positive statements about art works and pick out certain elements in a peer’s artwork that represents the type of art that students learned about. Collect and view completed works to see if students understood concept of Surrealism. Mount finished artworks on colored paper and post on bulletin board in hallway with a short description of what the class did and some background information on the artist students’ works were inspired by.
